Organic Food: Why is it so important?

Posted August 16, 2022

So why is eating organic food so important, and why don’t more of us eat organic food and use organic products? Let's be frank, when it comes to buying organic, most of us think it is too expensive. Even though we spend lots of money on things (we don’t need) without questioning the cost, when it comes to buying organic items, we become financially responsible. Maybe it's because you can easily compare prices to conventional foods too easily. It does make sense that if you compare two bunches of bananas next to each other that look the same (and probably taste the same), you buy the cheaper one. I get it, but what are you gaining by buying the cheaper banana? I’ll tell you!

  • Fewer nutrients
  • More pesticides
  • More preservatives
  • More herbicides
  • More growth hormone (in livestock)
  • More antibiotics and medications (to prevent disease in livestock)

If you lined up all of the (non-beneficial) products used to ensure large-scale production like pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, and preservatives in addition to the antibiotics and medications used to prevent disease in farm animals, you would be horrified. Also, if you knew what is in these products you would wonder how it is even signed off by the FDA as ok for human consumption. Not to say that everything about organic food is perfect, but it significantly lowers your risk of developing health issues down the road.

There is no question as to why so many chronic diseases are prevalent, but many would say that as you age you become more at risk for such diseases based on age alone. The truth is, as you age, it is more difficult for your body to filter out all of the junk that you consume and your metabolic processes become less efficient. Our organs become less able to do their jobs, and a negative ripple effect happens. This may result in chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and gastrointestinal diseases. Our cells may also function less efficiently, or they become mutated, and we all know what happens when our cells mutate. The dreaded “C” word has touched us all in one way or another.

The human body is perfect in every way when it receives the nutrients it needs. So the combination of not consuming foods with their natural nutritional value coupled with all of the harmful products your body has to process in inorganic foods, your chances of “getting sick” is elevated. The odds of receiving what your body needs goes way down when you consume products that have been highly processed as is the case in inorganic foods.

I get it, many people are already on a budget, and buying more expensive items is not realistic, but that is not the case for the majority of people reading this blog. It is a matter of choice. It could and should be more about prioritizing health. Period.

If you are serious about your health or even mildly concerned, you should be more aware of what you can do to lower the risk of health issues for yourself and your family (especially for your young children). Spending 10% more on higher quality is well worth it if it means lowering the chances of illness. Besides, when you get sick, or a family member gets sick, you ultimately pay much more than if you had made consuming organic products a norm.

Here is a short list of foods that you should prioritize buying organic.

  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Grapes
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Kale/Collards
  • Squash
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Hot Peppers

Here is a list of items to worry less about buying organic.

  • Asparagus
  • Avacado
  • Mushroom
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet Corn
  • Eggplant
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Onion
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Grapefruit
  • Cantaloupe

Remember that it is not normal for people to get sick. You get sick when your body is unable to defend itself in most cases. We do have the ability to control our health, but we must make it a priority.

Eating organic food is not the cure-all for all things health-wise, but it will significantly lower the risk of many illnesses. Our bodies are simply not designed to process many of the items that we find in our food (especially in the USA). Eating organic simply gives your body a better chance to do its job.

I am writing this blog so that you may be more aware of what you are consuming. Simply being aware of what you are consuming goes a long way even when you make less than healthy choices.

At Blueholistics, we are interested in all things that contribute to holistic health. Eating and consuming organic products is one of many ways to optimize your health. I strive to live a life where I prioritize health on many different fronts, but I am far from perfect as are most people. I strive to bring awareness to the multitude of things we can be doing to optimize the health of ourselves and our families.
